Smitten

"What is 'true virtue'?" It is when you are honest not because it profits you or makes you feel better, but because you are smitten with the beauty of the God who is all truth and sincerity and faithfulness. It is when you come to love truth-telling not for your sake, but for God's sake and its own sake. That kind of motivation can only grow in someone deeply touched by God's grace.

Song We Wish We’d Written – #41

#41 by Dave Matthews - Even after reading up on this song on Wikipedia, I can't fully tell you what it means. All I can tell you is that I love it.  Personally I prefer the Dave + Tim renditions of it to the DMB versions, as is true of most of his work.

Site Updates

Part of me hates to bore you with information on site updates. With the fact that many of you are probably accessing this through an RSS feed reader service, I realize that you may never even see the actual site and may not care. Nonetheless, I did make  few changes to the design, but more importantly, I added a wealth of content that I want you to know about.

I started this site nearly 3 years ago. Then I started a music site which I later merged into this one. Then I opened another site for my thoughts on church and God. Then I closed this site. Then I re-opened it with no archived content...
Now, I've imported everything back into here, so overnight I jumped from roughly 150 posts to well over 550 posts dating back to March 2008. I figured, what good is all that content doing in places where it will never be found?

I consolidated my categories because the resulting 18 categories were a bit much. So, I tried to re-categorize as best as possible without spending a lot of time on it. Then I threw a new face onto all of it.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Monday Morning List

Friday:

  • Hung out with Lincoln and bought some groceries.
  • Got my replacement book in the mail from the mistake that had been made previously. If you need to buy books online, let me recommend the folks at WonderBook. When I told them of the mistake, they overnighted the correct book and told me to just keep the other one that was wrong, but still enjoyable.
  • Took the family to Blue Cherry for some frozen yogurt after dinner.

Saturday

  • Went to breakfast with my dad and my brother's family. Went back to my brother's house and opened Christmas presents since we were out of town for Christmas.
  • Looked for work while Katie and Lincoln took a nap.
  • Cleaned house and watched part of District 9 while Katie was at work.

Sunday

  • Went to early service at church.
  • Took a great nap.
  • Cooked homemade chili.

The week ahead:

  • Electric guitars for the record are being done on Monday.
  • I'll be re-tracking some guitar and vocal parts on Wednesday.
  • Maybe hitting a birthday party on Saturday.

Songs We Wish We’d Written – Forgiveness

Forgiveness by Patty Griffin - When I went to Nashville back in 2003, everyone was talking about Patty Griffin and hoping to get tickets to her show at The Ryman. i was particularly impressed that Matt Wertz had her album cover framed on his wall alongside other major influences. When I got back to Lubbock, I found her "Living with Ghosts" record and fell in love with it. This is my favorite song from that record. Here's a bonus clip of Matt Nathanson performing a great cover version of it.

Monday Morning List

Friday

  • Katie worked, so Lincoln and I hung out and went grocery shopping.
  • We all went over to the Webb home to hang out with the Webbs and Ashfords for a little early New Year's Eve time. Got an early listen to the new Jon Webb EP that's coming out in a few months and let me tell you, you'll want your own copy.
  • Came back home and half-heartedly watched the ball drop in NYC, then watched the guitar try to drop and get stuck in Nashville.

Saturday

  • We all just took it easy on Saturday morning.
  • Went to dinner at Olive Garden with a gift card we got for Christmas.
  • Watched 3 episodes of The Locator - you'll be hard-pressed to find a more moving program on television.

Sunday

  • Had a great morning at church and got to hear my friend, Andy Beams, speak. Lincoln had a little bit of a hard time adjusting to the nursery, but then didn't want to leave after they fed him Goldfish crackers and let him play with a boat.
  • Nap for everyone.
  • Went back to Olive Garden to try and recover the gift card that I left there. They didn't have it, but graciously took my word and made me a new one.
  • Ran a few more errands with the family.
  • Watched "I Survived..." and went to bed.

Monday

  • Hanging out with Lincoln 'til naptime then going to do some prep work for my interview tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
