Moments of Experience
We live in a globalized, consumerist world where we increasingly live our lives as brief moments of experience constructed around consumerist images and events that are supposed to provide meaning.
Alan Roxburgh, The Sky is Falling, 32
Are you interacting with people in a way that provides meaning to their lives in the brief moments that you spend with them?
Monday Morning List
Katie is really sick, still. Please pray for her. I'm taking her back to the doctor tomorrow.
Friday
- Got some Pei Wei on the way home
- Took Lincoln to the library and the grocery store
- Watched The Losers
Saturday
- Got Lincoln's 18 month pictures taken
- Drove past the Grapevine Fire Station and saw that they were having an open house. Lincoln got to see a bunch of fire trucks, a helicopter, and bounced in a bounce house.
- Took Lincoln to a birthday party down the street.
- Grammy cooked us a great meatloaf for dinner.
Sunday
- Church.
- Watched some football.
- Tried to take Lincoln to the park but there was some huge festival going on so we went to another not-as-cool park. We saw some ducks and ran in the grass.
- Fought for a couple of hours to get him to go to bed.
- Watched some tv and worked on stuff.
Monday
- Taking Katie to the doctor today. Hopefully he can give her something to make her feel better.
Thankful
It's been a kind of rough week with Katie being so sick. Nonetheless, I have much to be thankful for this week. So, I thought a formal list was in order.
- Thanks to the city of Keller for building an awesome park right outside the library 20 years ago that a boy and his dad can enjoy together today.
- Thanks to Lincoln for being an awesome trooper and being flexible to new situations
- Thanks to my co-workers for covering for me and allowing me to spend some time at home taking care of the family.
- Thanks to my in-laws for sending Grammy down to help out. She has been indispensable.

- Thanks to Christopher for sending out great recommendations on my behalf to aid in the career search.
- Thanks to David for having lunch with me and encouraging me in my search.
______________________
- Thanks to Melissa for sharing my love of obscure Scottish rock bands and informing me weeks ago that Frightened Rabbit would be here.
- Thanks to my wonderful wife for being ok with me leaving the house at 9:30 after Lincoln went to bed to make it to the show in time for their set.
- Thanks to Iceland for keeping their darn volcano in line this time so that the show wasn't canceled like last time.
- Thanks to Clay for being a good friend and indulging my obscure musical tastes.
- Thanks to Frightened Rabbit for reminding me why I love live music and that sometimes it is ok to pay more than $5 for a concert. I'm so glad that I didn't let that dissuade me. The show was amazing.
______________________
- Thanks to Wes for believing in my music and for being a good friend.
- Thanks to the folks that have already donated their tremendous talents and time to work on the record.
- But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. - 1 Cor. 15:57-58
Songs We Wish We’d Written – Lost and Found
Lost and Found by Randy Rogers Band - I wish that I'd been able to find a YouTube clip of the Live at Billy Bob's performance because it kills. This song is country music. The fiddle solo is pure gold. Unfortunately, it seem that Randy has gone the way of Pat Green - that is, Nashville. Still, these old songs will always be greatness.
Monday Morning List: Monday Afternoon Essay Edition
It's been an interesting weekend. Katie is feeling horrible, so I came home earlier than normal on Friday and have been taking care of Lincoln so that she can rest. I had to be at church yesterday morning, but I took today off as well. Hopefully she'll be back on her feet soon.
Lincoln and I have been having fun hanging out. We've wandered our way through Target, Walmart, Half-Price Books, World Market, and even got a killer deal on a new portable hard drive at Office Depot.
Most of the time, though we've hung out at the Keller Public Library (since we finally got our card last weekend). We got some good music and books on Friday. I've yet to watch my Gotham Knight DVD. I tried watching it when it first came out, but I just don't dig that style of animation. Lincoln has really been digging this Trucktown book that we picked up. In case you didn't know, I'm a huge fan of reading and of public libraries. The Clackamas Public Library in Portland, OR darn near saved my life while I was living there. You pay for it, you might as well take advantage. Read, watch, listen to things that you would never just walk into a store and buy. You'll find yourself surprised. I promise.
On Saturday, they had a meeting of the Keller Folk Music Society. We didn't stop in, but we did pass by. I was hoping for a special appearance by the New Main Street Singers or The Folksmen. No luck there. Not really sure wha happened.
People Are People
Katie and I like to watch Undercover Boss. It's not uncommon that we learn something or are moved by the program. You would think that people would have caught on by now, but I'm not going to hold that against them yet.
The thing is, since this new season started - and we're only 2 episodes in - it seems like the people that are pegged to work alongside the boss have had bigger tragedies and more compelling stories. So, it seemed to me to be more of a set-up. And there haven't been any bad employees shown (another sign of things being staged). But after realizing my own judgementalism I thought, "well, you know, we've all got some tragedy and we're all a little screwed up."
At the end of the show, the boss quoted his father and said, I've never known what this meant until now...
People are people.
Simple, yet profound. And if it hadn't been for my own realization earlier in the program, it probably would have flown right past me.
People are people. We are all uniquely the same. We all have hurts, we all have hardships, we've all been wounded. It doesn't matter what kind of car you drive, how big your house is, or what you consider to be a "nice" restaurant. It reminded me of
We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.
2 Cor. 4:7 NLT
We're all cracked pots. Even if we've been patched on the outside. If our contents don't leak, it simply because something other than ourselves is holding us together.
Pots are Pots and People are People.
Portfolio
I spent the weekend building a digital portfolio online. You can check it out here.
Let me know what you think or if you have any questions about the randomness you find there. On the video page you'll find the previously-discussed Bill Bartowsky video.

Monday Morning List
- Worked
- Went home and took care of Lincoln. He would not take a nap and thus derailed much of my plans. Did get one item checked off my list.
- Did grocery shopping.
- Fed him dinner and gave him a bath.
- When Katie got home I went and hung out with my old friend Ryon at Baja in Grapevine. Good times. Had been way too long.
Saturday
- Lincoln and I drove 6 miles to the Fort Worth library to get a library card so that in the future we can drive 2 miles to the Keller library and check things out.
- Got him down for a nap with far less of a fight and actually got some things done.
- After naptime and a spaghetti dinner, we went across the street to the park and played on the playground. We also got to see some ducks!
- Went home and got Lincoln down for bed then cleaned house.
Sunday
- Church.
- Took Lincoln for more grocery shopping.
- Got him to bed and then watched Undercover Boss and some animal attack survival shows with Katie. (They're just so addictive.)
Today
- The Caroline project moves one step closer to completion.
