Today’s the Day

So, Nolan Ryan and Mark Cuban go head to head today bidding on the Texas Rangers. Nolan obviously represents the sentimental choice while Cuban is probably the better choice from a business standpoint. That's not to say that Ryan has no business acumen, in fact, he's done quite well for himself, but Cuban has the proven track record.

I'm emotionally attached to Nolan Ryan having grown up with him as my hero. I remember waking up to hear of his 6th no-hitter in Oakland... which doesn't even hold a candle to having seen his 7th no-hitter in person. I think that his presence in the organization over the last couple of years has had a huge impact in getting them to the position that they are in. But deep in my heart, I don't feel like he could sustain the team and develop them into the entity that Cuban could.

For a team that has such an abysmal past as the Rangers, they need some outside the box thinking to get them propelled to the next level. Any team can go out and play good for a season and then drift back into oblivion. It takes more than winning to develop a brand. Cuban and Jerry Jones both know this. I don't like the way that Cuban went about getting involved but I'll support his involvement. I'd love it if he could manage to keep Nolan around, but I don't really see that happening.

Of course, none of that really matters if the team doesn't stop SLUMPING. Seriously. Get it together.
