Baby Birthday?

We're headed into the hospital this morning to get started having this baby.

I'll try and get some photos posted as soon as possible. Thanks for your prayers and support.

Monday Morning List

We haven't had our baby yet, but I'll let you know when we do. In the meantime, I'm going to keep this morning's list pretty short.

  • Rented Bourne Identity 4, oh wait, I mean Quantum of Solace - seriously, this show was a mess. Well, it was kind of entertaining, but mostly a mess.
  • Ran a lot of errands to continue getting ready for our boy.
  • Did some work around the house: patched some nail holes, touched up some paint, broke then fixed the dryer.

Now, we'll just keep waiting.

Media Friday: Favorite Albums – Living with Ghosts

I'm going to try to start a new feature, cataloguing some of my all-time favorite albums. First up, Patty Griffin: Living with Ghosts. If you had to categorize it by genre, I guess you might call this album "country" but it is so much more. Chock full of great songwriting and passionate vocals, the whole album is simply captivating.

I discovered the album in a rather unique way. In January of 2003 I spent about 10 days in Nashville, working for a client who was recording a record. While we were there, I kept hearing this name, Patty Griffin, everywhere I went. The record producer was trying to get tickets to see her at the Ryman, one of our other musician friends had the album cover the wall at his house. So, when I got back home from the trip, I went out and found it. And I'm glad I did.

Released in 1996, Living with Ghosts, was Griffin's debut album. She's since released 6 more records and written songs that have been recorded by numerous artists. For my money, though, it doesn't get any better than this one.

REMINDER: Free Book Giveaway

REPOSTED FROM 3.19.09

I'm really excited about today's post. A couple of months ago, I happened across an old friend from college who just released his first book. I offered to help him out in whatever way I could and now I'm getting my chance...

Love Notes: a biblical look at love

Author Ryan Dalgliesh has spent the last 13 years studying what the Bible has to say about the subject of love: How does God love us? How should we love one another? How does that play out uniquely in the context of marriage? This book is the culmination of his personal notes on the topic.

From the cover: "This is not a book full of opinions or stories about "what worked for me." Rather, in these pages you will find how the Bible answers these questions. Love Notes is a concise look at what the Bible has to teach us about everything related to love."

Giveaway: As part of getting the word out there about Love Notes, Higher Rock ministries is giving away copies of the book to readers who are willing to write a review on either their blog, facebook or both. All you have to do to get a free copy is send your name, address, email, and phone number to LoveNotesBook@gmail.com.

Personal Note: I had the great fortune of having Ryan as my Bible study leader my first year of college. He has the unique ability to, in the same breath, both challenge and affirm. He is a great communicator as well as a great listener who is unafraid to cut through facades and get to the heart of matter. He is already working on his second book as well as ministering as an itinerate speaker. Check out the video below of the Love Notes Conference.

You can find out more about the conference here. Check them out on facebook. Or order the book from Amazon.

Update

So, we're probably just a few days away from baby. Things have been pretty busy/crazy for the last week or so.

I'm going to try and load up a couple of posts to go live over the next few days while I'm out of pocket - well, just to be prepared.

I'm still looking for a full-time job. My main areas of expertise are in event management/planning and communications. I'd love to put that to use in the entertainment industry, but those jobs are few and far between. If you know of/hear of anything, please let me know.

Also, I'm going to do a quick update of what I'm listening to in the sidebar, so all you RSS folks stop by and check that out.

Media Friday: Me vs. Neil

Earlier this week I was feeling a little down until a song shuffled through on iTunes and lifted my spirits. It caused me to post this on Twitter:

ryanbrymer: you can't be in a bad mood while listening to Neil Diamond's "Holly Holy." It's just not possible.

Well, I've been working on my own version of the song and took the time to record it yesterday. If you're not familiar with the song, Holly Holy you should definitely listen to Neil's version first.

Disclaimer: The audio isn't that great on mine, and I don't have the benefit of an invisible full band and gospel choir that he has.

Out of Focus

I've been in a funk for a few weeks now. Stressed, worry, anxious, perhaps even depressed. Content has suffered - both online and off.

Last night, though, I was thinking and praying that I could see certain things the way that God sees them. Then I realized, maybe this is the whole problem... I've been looking at life through my own eyes and, like putting on a pair of glasses to enhance my vision, I've been trying various techniques to manage my perspective and response. These techniques, however, are often little more than coping strategies intended to help me through a moment's struggle.

What I need is a whole new set of eyes. Eyes that see clearly and honestly.

Of course, I'm not speaking of literal eyes, but rather a perspective on the world. One that rightly prioritizes life. One that values people for who they are, rather than what they do or can provide. One that sees myself as I am, not the sum of my success or failures.

Things have been out of focus. I'm ready to see life as it truly is, not simply as it is presented.
