Reading Update
As you probably know by now, I love to read. For the last few years, I've challenged myself to read a certain number of books. This past year, I'm pleased to announce that I met my goal which was 30 books. I probably could have surpassed this number had it not been for my last quarter fascination with comic books (everybody's got to have a hobby, right?).
Sadly, however, I feel that 2008 may have been my final year for such a huge amount of reading. Last year I had a lot more flexibility in my schedule to do so. This year I have a baby coming, so I may do some reading but the books are most likely to be made of cardboard and eventually become something for him to chew on rather than listen to.
The point of today, though, was to give you a peek at my bookshelf. Toward the end of last year I took the handful of books that I was only a chapter or two into and just re-shelved them. Two pages, twice a week is no way to read a book. I kept out Making Room for Life by Randy Frazee because, though my reading has slowed, it is still a great book and an easy read. I hope to finish it in the next couple of weeks. Also, my wife was kind enough to buy my a casual reading book (because reading for pleasure is great medicine). This book is Batman: Inferno. It's a Batman novel. It's not bad.
I've got a book on my shelf that I haven't started yet, but intend to read because I promised to write a review of it and just haven't had time. It's a bit of a unique product, The Truth About You by Marcus Buckingham. Apparently it's a video, plus a book, plus a workbook. I've read and listened to Buckingham before, so I'm sure it's great, I just need to get it into the rotation.
Finally, I'm working my way throught the book of Mark in the New Testament. I'm reading it kind of slowly so as to take it all in.
I don't have a total book goal for the year, and I think that maybe that is good for right now.
So, what's on your bookshelf?

TroySims:
Very impressive my friend! 30 books, that's great!
And I would consider your graphic novels books too
of course I do share your fondness of them.
Now onto your question. What's on my bookshelf?
I'm trying to finish up Lewis 'Mere Christianity', also I'm almost done with 'The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' which contains five Douglas Adams novels.
My to read list includes 'Sinner' by Ted Dekker, 'Brisingr' by Christopher Paolini, Dan Brown's 'Da Vinci Code' and to finally finish 'Walking the Bible' by Bruce Feiler and Erickson's 'Intro to Christian Doctrine'.
And I'm reading through Proverbs right now, one chapter a day. Oh yeah and reading any graphic novels that a certain friend loans me!
That's my book plans for the year.
Ryan:
I just don't count the comic books because they are such a quick read that
they don't seem like a "real book." Now if I were reading a complete work
like say, Watchmen or 300, then I would count that, but what I've got are
really just compiled issues of ongoing books.
I like that your bookshelf contains quite a variety of reading material. Is
this your first time with DaVinci Code? It¹s a favorite of mine, though not
as good as it¹s predecessor, Angels and Demons.
Dan:
My current reading list looks like this:
<ul>
<li>Desiring God by John Piper</li>
<li>Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis</li>
</ul>
I haven't yet compiled an impressive list of to-read books, so I'll hold off on that. Troy, my wife and I are also reading a Proverb-a-day together, because I think as we enter 2009, the year that we are becoming first-time parents, wisdom is EXACTLY what we need.
Dan:It would be nice for Tilling the Soil 2.0 if we could edit our comments…
If so, I would get rid of that HTML in the above comment.
Ryan:
I'll try to look into this.
TroySims:
Yes, first time with DaVinci Code. I read Digital Fortress by him and really enjoyed that. And I'm sure I'll give Angels and Demons a shot when I'm done with DaVinci Code.
Ryan:
Digital Fortress was ok, good twist at the end with the Japanese storyline.
The other one, Deception Point, was pretty intense.
